Cleaning and How-To Instructions for your Pilates Equipment

Gratz Pilates apparatus are crafted to the original specifications developed by Joseph Pilates and are built for consistent, long-term use. Each piece of Gratz equipment is recognized for its durability, precision, and consistent long-term performance—which is why it’s trusted by classical Pilates studios and instructors around the world.
To maintain their integrity and performance, do not modify the equipment or use non-Gratz components. Unauthorized alterations can compromise both safety and the intended biomechanics of the Pilates system. Only genuine Gratz parts and accessories should be used for maintenance or repair to uphold performance standards and extend the life of your apparatus.
-
Before you Clean your Pilates Equipment:
Inspect all hardware components including screws, bolts, nuts, clips, springs, and hooks. Regularly check all attachments to ensure safe and reliable operation. Carefully inspect springs for any signs of wear or damage.
-
Safety Guidelines when cleaning:
Keep hair, loose clothing, and jewelry away from all moving parts. Jewelry, in particular, can damage the vinyl upholstery. For safety, never allow children to use or play on the equipment.

Proper Cleaning of your Pilates Equipment
What should I use to clean the upholstery?
Clean using a solution of 1 part household liquid dish soap to 10 parts water (1:10 ratio). Lightly dampen a soft cloth with the solution and wipe the surface—avoid saturating the upholstery, as excessive moisture can cause damage.
Important: Do not use essential oils such as tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, or similar substances. These ingredients can dry out the upholstery over time, leading to cracking, splitting, and premature wear.
Regular, gentle cleaning with simple solutions will help preserve the quality and longevity of your Gratz equipment for years to come.

How do I clean the Gratz Reformer wheels?
-
Basics: Wheels should be cleaned and lubricated every three months using Molykote 44 Medium. This product can be purchased at most industrial supply stores. Wheels must be removed, cleaned, greased, and refastened. Apply lubricant to the interior wheel bearing only. Do not lubricate the wheel itself or lubricate the tracks.
-
Instructions: In order to remove and re-fasten the wheels you will need two 1/2" spanners for the track wheels and one 5/32 hex key for the guide wheels. Be sure to clean all hardware (screws, bolts, etc.) with a clean, dry rag before re-attaching the wheel, as grime, hair, etc. may be present. Lubricate the wheel bearing interior only. It is very important that you do not lubricate the tracks or the wheel itself. If the wheels show signs of wear, then the wheels must be replaced.
Do not spray the outside of the wheels with aerosol grease. This is not an acceptable alternative to a regular and thorough maintenance inspection. Do not use on Triopine Wheels.
How do I clean the Gratz Reformer tracks?
To remove black streaks, only use water with a few drops of dish detergent (spray and wipe), or if you do use the Method lavender all-purpose spray, only leave it on for a minute or two at most. Usually, you should wipe it off almost right away. If you leave the Method lavender all-purpose spray on too long, it may result in white spots. Try going over the spots gently with a Scotch Brite pad to remove the streaks.
Cleaning your Pilates Springs
Take particular care of your springs and inspect your springs weekly. Springs should be immediately replaced if any distortion appearance of springs is observed, or any unusual sounds emanate from the springs.
