One of the things I love most about Joseph Pilates’ work is the opportunity to revisit familiar exercises and discover something new. My background as a dancer, gymnast, and movement educator has given me a particular vocabulary. And my decades of studying and teaching Classical Pilates have provided the foundation from which to experiment.
My Introduction to Classical Pilates
When I began studying Pilates in 1992, the dancer and gymnast in me were immediately excited by the possibilities of the repertoire. But I was in Romana’s certification program, and my focus was on learning the Work. It wasn’t until around 1997 that I felt ready to begin experimenting with what my body was learning.
Romana said that the leg and arm circles were best practiced on a barrel because the angle of the Spine Corrector gave exceptional support to the pelvis and spine during these basic but valuable exercises.
But over the years, I’ve found myself approaching this remarkable apparatus with a different curiosity. What happens when I take an exercise traditionally performed on the Mat or Reformer and bring it to the Spine Corrector? How does its curved surface change the experience? What possibilities does the seat offer?
For me, this is where the fun begins.

Turning Classical Pilates into an Exploration
My explorations often begin with an exercise I already know. I’ll bring it from the Mat or Reformer to the Spine Corrector. Then curiosity takes over. What if I attach Therabands to the handles? What happens when I introduce resistance? Can I recruit something different, deepen a connection, or discover a sensation I hadn’t experienced before?
One question leads to another, and before long, a familiar exercise has opened the door to an entirely new investigation. The barrel is only part of the story. There’s also the seat, and the relationship between the two. Over time, I’ve found myself exploring familiar exercises from entirely different perspectives, discovering possibilities that weren’t necessarily apparent when I first encountered this versatile piece of apparatus.

Creating Subtle Changes on the Spine Corrector
Take Open Leg Rocker, for example. By bringing this familiar Mat exercise to the seat of the Spine Corrector, I began exploring the very beginning of the rolling action. Not a big movement, but a small, deliberate rock that allowed me to investigate how the deep lower abdominals initiate the movement from beneath the pelvis. It’s a subtle exploration, but sometimes the smallest movements reveal the most interesting discoveries.
And then, there’s a little moment of delight I experience when something unexpected reveals itself during practice. Once I’ve discovered something worth sharing, my teacher’s mind takes over. How can I create a progression that begins with what a student already knows and gradually introduces something unfamiliar?
Over time, my explorations have extended beyond the Mat and Reformer to the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and Spine Corrector. That’s often how one of my Gold Specials is born.

The Birth of a Gold Special
I began playfully calling my variations “Gold Specials.” My clients would hear me announce, “Here comes a Gold Special!” and immediately groan, knowing that an exercise they already knew was about to be kicked up a notch—or two, or three! Fortunately, the groans were usually followed by smiles, and to this day, my clients still love them.
The repertoire may be familiar, but the discoveries are never finished.
