Preserving the Legacy: Why We Established the Traditional Pilates Movement Collective

Preserving the Legacy: Why We Established the Traditional Pilates Movement Collective

Written by Hilary Opheim and Davita Paul

The Traditional Pilates Movement Collective (TPMC) is an educational community dedicated to supporting Pilates teachers and those aspiring to become teachers. We believe in the power of continuous learning and in fostering a positive, encouraging environment for professional development.

We created TPMC out of a deep, long-held appreciation for the Pilates method. Throughout our careers as movement teachers and practitioners, we have seen the profound benefit Pilates has for our clients' wellness, longevity, and vitality. As fitness trends come and go, Pilates has continued to support client goals across the lifespan and abilities. We recognized the need for a dedicated educational and learning studio on the West Coast, anchored in the method of Traditional Pilates.

Our mission is simple: to anchor the Traditional work by helping teachers understand the System of Pilates and movement science to feel confident in how to best teach each unique client.

Too often, modern commercial training programs rush students through their curriculum, leaving them with a certificate of program completion but not feeling equipped to start a career. Many times, programs are fully or partially online, lacking the personalized mentoring that the Pilates Method should encompass. Similarly, many programs teach blocked or isolated exercises, but forget about teaching how to see Pilates as a system. Because of this, we hear from many teachers looking for guidance, mentoring, and bridging to gain a mastery of Pilates, and understand the why and how of the system based on the Traditional work and the science of movement.

Whether a teacher feels lost after completing a training program and is trying to find their path, or a seasoned professional wanting to deepen knowledge and keep learning about the Pilates method, TPMC was built to be an educational home base.

Why did we build Traditional Pilates Movement Collective?

Our passion stems from a common shared experience among Pilates teachers: the realization that the deeper we go into the foundations, the more the magic of the work emerges. By studying the traditional method, even after practicing Pilates for 30 years, we still learn new things in our movement profile.

In a fitness landscape that often dilutes original methodologies to become the latest social media trends and viral reels, many teachers find themselves frustrated and burnt out, trying to piece together a chaotic mix of generic exercises.

We built a bustling, collaborative hub where the global Pilates community can converge, study, and discover the deep connections of the work.

By merging the original roots of the method with current movement science and kinesiology, we empower teachers to become true "Movement Detectives." As a client moves, we analyze their unique biomechanics, guiding that specific body through its optimal movement while remaining anchored in the foundational system.

What TPMC Offers the Pilates Community

Our collective is designed to elevate your teaching, your personal practice, and your passion for this lifelong learning journey.

  • For Teachers Who Feel Lost After Rushed Training: Commercial, fast-track programs often leave you with an index card of choreography but no real understanding of how to apply it. TPMC bridges that gap. We provide a supportive environment to refine your eye, practice your hands-on cueing, and find the links that make the exercises effective.

  • For Teachers Wanting to Deepen Knowledge: Avoid professional burnout by reinspiring your work. We offer advanced continuing education, masterclasses, and a collaborative space to workshop complex client cases and pathologies with peers.

  • The Gratz Connection: You cannot truly understand Traditional Pilates movement without the correct resistance, proportions, and design of Gratz equipment. At TPMC, our entire space is built around this apparatus, allowing teachers to feel the precise feedback necessary to master the system and understand how the body responds.

Focus on the Cues & True Mentorship

We move past simple "exercise picking" and focus heavily on the why behind the work. In our workshops and collective sessions, we deep-dive into:

  • Systemic Teaching: Learning how to assess the body on the Mat and Reformer, and understanding why and how you can guide a client through the studio—utilizing the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Pedi Pole, and more—to unlock a specific movement or connection.

  • Workshops: Every Spring and Fall, we host intensive 4-hour workshops (offering 4 NPCP CECs) in our Los Angeles studio and live via Zoom. This Fall, our workshop focuses on effective and appropriate hands-on support with Tactile Cueing to Assist and Flow, helping you keep clients moving seamlessly without unintentionally inhibiting movement.

  • Previous workshops have included: Functional Training in Pilates, Working with the Client in Pain—Pain Science in Movement, The Hypermobile Client, and Cueing: Outdated to Updated.

  • Study of the System: Moving beyond a standard, rigid bridging program, this is our comprehensive, year-long mentorship program designed specifically for teachers who missed out on the deeper details during their original training, or those seeking fresh inspiration to overcome professional burnout.

Shedding the Common Mistakes in Traditional Pilates

A massive part of our collective philosophy is breaking the counterproductive habits that frequently slip into commercialized, trendy fitness. We help teachers avoid:

  • Over-cueing, rapid-fire cues, or telling a client how to do something—all of which disrupt the client's internal focus and autonomy.

  • Treating exercises as isolated, fragmented movements rather than a continuous, flowing system.

  • Making the client fit the exercise so it "looks right" instead of adjusting the exercise to fit the client.

Traditional Pilates Variations & Community Inclusivity

We strongly believe that traditional Pilates is for everybody. Our teaching highlights how the Traditional system inherently accommodates everyone:

  • Beginner-Friendly Anchors: We teach Pilates teachers how to use foundational exercises, adjustments, and modifications built into Gratz apparatus to assist injured, deconditioned, or brand-new clients safely.

  • Progressive Challenges: For advanced practitioners, we explore the deep connections of the high-level archival repertoire, pushing the boundaries of control, stamina, and flow, showing you how to get the client to understand the concepts needed for that high-level repertoire.

  • Apparatus Versatility: We show you how to seamlessly transition a single theme—like articulation, symmetry, mobilization, counter-rotation, etc.—across the Mat, Reformer, and auxiliary apparatus to give your clients a deeply cohesive, functional workout.
