April Apparatus of the Month: Electric High Chair

Photo Via: Axis lbc Classical Pilates

The Pilates Electric High Chair inspired focused, full-body work throughout April, reinforcing its essential role in Classical Pilates as a tool for developing strength, balance, and control.

The High Chair organizes the body vertically, demanding precision and stability through both body weight and spring resistance. Its unique design supports a wide range of exercises that refine posture, deepen core engagement, and enhance coordination across the entire system. The work emphasizes control over momentum, cultivating a more intentional and integrated movement pattern.

As stability is established through the center, movement becomes more efficient and controlled. This practice enhances balance, strengthens functional movement, and promotes a more aligned, responsive body, qualities that extend beyond the studio into everyday life.

Gratz Pilates Community Highlights

Throughout April, the Gratz community demonstrated thoughtful exploration and disciplined work on the Electric Chair, showcasing both foundational strength and advanced control. We saw creative progressions and purposeful programming that highlight the versatility and depth of the apparatus. Together, these contributions reflect the enduring value of the Electric Chair within the Classical Pilates system.

In this post, Eli of Pucka Pilates explores the Pilates Electric High Chair through dynamic, unilateral work that demands constant reorganization of the body. With a reduced base of support and vertical load, each movement highlights the need for balance, coordination, and real-time control.

Eli exemplified the clear focus on asymmetry and how the work reveals and strengthens weaker patterns. The approach reflects a thoughtful understanding of how the Electric Chair challenges the body to move with precision, intention, and integrity.

May Spotlight: The Ladder Barrel

This month, we spotlight the Gratz Pilates Ladder Barrel, a distinctive apparatus designed to support flexibility, strength, and spinal articulation. With its curved barrel and vertical ladder, this piece invites the body to move through space with both support and challenge, encouraging a deeper exploration of length, control, and alignment.

More than just a tool for flexibility, the Ladder Barrel creates an opportunity to open the body while maintaining connection to the center. Its rounded surface supports the spine through extension, flexion, and side bending, allowing for greater range of motion while reinforcing control and precision. Whether used for stretching, strengthening, or refining articulation, the work emphasizes fluidity without sacrificing structure.

We can’t wait to see how you incorporate the Ladder Barrel into your teaching this month. Tag @gratz_pilates to share your sessions—we look forward to featuring your work all month long.
