“Dreaming big, of building a thriving Pilates studio in Italy, would have been unthinkable without Gratz.”
Patricia Medros, Founder/Teacher Trainer
One Pilates Rome
One Pilates Rome is located in the heart of Rome’s beautiful old city, a few steps from Piazza Navona. The studio is housed in a majestic 16th-century building, as elegant today as it was when it was built.
In 2001, I opened One Pilates Rome with a mission to establish the classical Method in Italy. Having studied in the USA with exceptional teachers⎯Romana Kryzanowska, Juanita Lopez, and Bob Liekens, to name a few⎯I arrived in Italy optimistic that classical Pilates would transcend cultures and borders. From those small beginnings, One Pilates Rome has grown to become both a studio and a teacher training school. Clients and apprentices hail from all over Europe, North America, and further afield⎯testament to the universal appeal of Pilates.
I came to Pilates twenty years ago, seeking relief from the pain of two herniated discs. Within the first lessons, my spirits lifted as I grasped the possibilities. My focus changed: from banishing my pain, to becoming my strongest self. Before long, I enrolled in instructor training at the Pilates Studio of the Midwest⎯the Chicago satellite of Drago’s Gym, where Romana and Sari visited to conduct seminars and give lessons. Later, I also became a Power Pilates teacher trainer.
What inspires me about Pilates today? I still appreciate it as a strong workout. Yet through two decades of daily practice, I also know it as something greater: a pathway to awakening our innermost selves. Practiced with rigor and consistency, concentration intensifies and purpose comes clearly into focus. The result is a kind of magic: deep calm within, self-confidence, and the spirit to engage wholly with all of life. I teach only the original Pilates exercises, in their intended sequence, but I am told my style is unique.
One Pilates Rome studio apprentices are torchbearers of the Method. As such, and in keeping with my heritage, I design their training to be rigorous. They learn the classical repertoire, human anatomy, and the latest movement science. It is challenging, comprehensive, and a launch pad to a fulfilling career. Apprentices graduate feeling the Method keenly in their bodies, able to work safely and effectively with a wide range of clients, and knowing what it takes to stay engaged for a lifetime. They are the success of the studio.
When I left Chicago for Rome, I took with me only two suitcases of personal belongings⎯but all of my Gratz equipment! Dreaming big, of building a thriving Pilates studio in Italy, would have been unthinkable without Gratz.
When my clients and apprentices finish their lessons, I am confident they feel better in their bodies, and clearer in their minds. Gratz equipment challenges us and allows us to surpass our limits. It’s sturdy, reliable, and respectful of the body’s natural alignment. At the same time, it’s made to stay in the background, allowing the practitioner to take center stage. I've used my equipment every day for almost two decades, yet it looks and feels like new. Gratz is an integral part of why the legacy of classical Pilates endures in this Eternal City.
