The Archive Reformer is a vintage-inspired edition of the original Gratz Reformer, reintroduced in 2018 to recreate the specifications and feel of early Reformers built from Joseph Pilates’ early Contrology designs.
Built with firmer, denser foam on the carriage bed, the Archive Reformer provides a more solid, less cushioned surface. The shorter shoulder blocks reflect the dimensions of early Gratz Reformers.
The Gear Slots on the Gear Bar are 1 1/8 inches deeper than those found on the Universal Reformer, creating a greater spring angle and a subtly different resistance pattern that replicates the dynamic feel of vintage Gratz models. The Foot Bar sits lower compared to the Universal Reformer, further contributing to the distinct setup and feel.
A defining feature of the Archive Reformer is its polished Aluminum Foot Bar paired with an attachable Direct Contact Foot Bar Cover. The unpadded bar delivers a firmer point of contact with minimal cushioning under the feet, allowing for a more immediate and connected response from the apparatus.

While a skilled practitioner can work on any Pilates Reformer length, it is helpful to choose a size that supports the widest range of clients, especially when working with different body types, heights, and experience levels.
Workouts can also be fine-tuned by adjusting the gears or using accessories such as the Spacer or TV Box for shorter clients.
For a diverse client base, Gratz provides these general guidelines:
- 80 in: Generally recommended for individuals under 5 ft 8 in, as longer Reformers may be too long for some practitioners.
- 86 in: Generally recommended for individuals between 5 ft 8 in and 6 ft 2 in. This is the most popular choice for studios serving a wide range of client heights and experience levels.
- 89 in: Generally recommended for individuals over 6 ft 2 in.
These are not strict rules, but helpful guidelines to support comfort and alignment. If you have questions about selecting the right size for your studio or clients, we are always here to help.
