STUDIO

The Studio Marin is founded by Carolyn Coombs and Sarah Hester. The Studio is located in the West End Village in San Rafael, California (about 25 minutes north from San Francisco). The Studio opened to the San Rafael community on October 28th 2019. It was an eventful opening week, as the county was in the midst of a power black out due to the raging wildfires north of Marin County! Thankfully, Pilates requires no electricity! The Studio’s bright and airy space has 5 mat/tower units for 5 person classes (pre-COVID), a beautiful and serene sitting area, a retail area, and a private room with a reformer, Cadillac, wunda chair, high chair, and other accessories. Like most other studios during the Pandemic, The Studio has shifted their operations to online and offer a plethora of virtual classes, and online workout videos available through our website.

EQUIPMENT

Both Carolyn and Sarah were trained working with Gratz. Over the years, they have worked in many studios with varied equipment, but time and time again, they come back to their beloved Gratz equipment. There is a noticeable difference in your body when performing exercises from the Classical format on Gratz Equipment. The equipment provides a much deeper and connected workout and therefore consistently delivers superior results. Their clients (and Carolyn and Sarah) have never been happier!

Sarah and Carolyn met during their apprenticeship at Brooke Siler’s re:AB Pilates in New York City in 2011. Sarah is originally from Northern California, and Carolyn is originally from Baltimore, MD. After their respective graduations from the program (Sarah in 2012, Carolyn in 2013), Carolyn moved to San Francisco, while Sarah set up shop in New York. After 6 years, Sarah made the big decision to move back to the Bay Area and open up The Studio Marin. Carolyn and Sarah both come to Pilates from a more athletic/gym background, and they were looking to create the same rigorous East Coast style workout that they loved in New York City.

About Carolyn Coombs

Carolyn began studying under Brooke Siler and Cary Regan at re:AB Pilates in September 2012. After completing over 800 hours of training, she graduated the program and became a senior teacher at re:AB as well as Equinox Printing House and Plank Pilates. In March 2014, Carolyn, her husband, and their pup moved from New York City to San Francisco. Carolyn began teaching at Dharmaspace Pilates in March 2014 and in August of 2014, she purchased what is now Keep It Classical Pilates. In September 2016 Carolyn and Matt had their first child, Dash, and 2 years later made the move across the Bay to Mill Valley. In April 2019, Carolyn and Sarah formed The Studio Pilates Marin in San Rafael, CA. A passionate teacher who infuses every Pilates session with knowledge, energy, sweat and laughter, Carolyn is thrilled to be able to share her love of the Classical Pilates method with San Francisco and San Rafael. She is beyond excited to be opening up The Studio Marin with her good friend and partner, Sarah Hester.

Sarah Hester

Sarah began training in the world renowned re:AB Classical Pilates program in September 2011. After teaching at numerous Classical Pilates studios in New York City and in Westchester County, Sarah opened her first Classical Pilates studio in New York in 2016. Sarah's clients range in age from 9 years to 86 years old. She has worked with people to prepare for and rehabilitate from major surgeries, pre and post natal, cancer patients, athletes, models and entertainers. Sarah loves teaching Classical Pilates because it truly works for every body. She loves seeing the confidence people gain from a regular Classical Pilates practice. Hearing people say how they are no longer in pain, have gained flexibility, how their clothes fit better and how they performed better at their sport is so rewarding. Sarah is excited to be back home in Northern California and can't wait to help each client at The Studio fall in love with the Classical Pilates method!
